Future of Aerospace Electronics
BLU Electronic is actively involved in numerous R&D programmes, collaborating with leading Space and Avionics companies, top international universities and national and European research centers.
Diverse application fields
In house programme of ongoing Research & Development
We undertake an in a diverse number of application fields.
This is applied research with the intention to accumulate expertise in additional and specific areas of business or leading to the establishment of company product.
SITEF
ESA / NATIONAL
Synchronisation is a major problem affecting the Time and Frequency Synchronisation sector, in particular the critical infrastructures like Broadcast, Telecoms, and Electrical Utilities.
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) system currently utilised is vulnerable to threats like jamming, spoofing and are mostly controlled by the military.
To address the identified problems, BLU Electronic has developed an innovative system for time and frequency synchronisation (SITEF).
REGENESYS - Clean Sky 1
ESA / NASA
In collaboration with the University of Nottingham – BLU is the project coordinator. The REGENESYS system forms part of the overall Clean Sky Green Rotorcraft Integrated Technology Demonstrator.
The objective of REGENESYS is to develop the demonstrator of a flexible power conversion system incorporating multiple energy sources, as well as energy recovery and storage capability that can be further developed toward a new aircraft power distribution system which by the use of energy recovery, storage and subsequent managed distribution will reduce the energy footprint of the aircraft leading to reduced mass, maintenance, emissions and noise.
Specifically, REGENESYS is intended to provide a technology demonstrator comprising:
- Bidirectional power converters (BDC) which interface to a nominal 270VDC power bus with the capability to connect at their output to either energy storage elements either loads
- Energy storage element(s)
The goal is demonstrating a system that will intelligently control all bidirectional converters interfacing loads or energy storage components of the system to provide a stable, flexible power distribution.
SCOPUS - Clean Sky 2
ESA / NATIONAL
Next-generation aircraft are being designed to run on a more electrical architecture – systems that are normally powered by hydraulics or pneumatics will be replaced by electrical versions. Airplane manufacturers are working on the development of battery, fuel cell or supercapacitor power supplies to reduce their emissions and curb fossil fuel use.
DC-to-DC converters are important electronic components in electric power supply systems. These integral links in the power chain move and process power from aircraft engine electrical generators.
The EU-funded project SCOPUS will design a smart compact DC-to-DC converter that will be more efficient and have a higher power density compared to state-of-the-art devices. The new modular device will ensure safe and reliable operation of next-generation electrical systems.
ANGELS
ESA / NASA
ADVANCED NEXT GENERATION LANDING SYSTEM
ANGELS is a high precision instrumental guidance system at the price of an optical guidance system. ANGELS makes use of standards and context aware customizable predictive software to dramatically increase the level of safety in Approach & Landing (A&L) operations.
ANGELS focuses in a very specific scenario: Helicopters A&L operations to helidecks at wind farms and Oil/Gas (O/G) rigs (our primary market), where poor visibility (optical guidance systems don’t help), complex glide paths (non straight line approaches), high density of obstacles and reduced space are a constant, and where decision makers (usually helidecks constructors and helicopter service companies) are very sensitive to price (small companies), who need affordable instrumental guidance solutions to comply with requirements from platforms managers.
PIGNOLETTO
REGIONE LOMBARDIA
Territory monitoring and precision agriculture through remote piloting
PIGNOLETTO is one of the 33 projects funded through the ‘Research and Innovation Call Hub’, promoted by the Lombardy Region.
It is a project that combines different skills present in the area – both research and industrial – applied to the theme of sustainability.
IDEN - Clean Sky 2
ESA / NASA
Innovative Distributed Electrical Network for Regional Aircraft
IDEN is a European Union Clean Sky 2 (CS2) Joint Technology Initiative for the Regional aircraft IADP (Innovative Aircraft Development Platform) and will contribute to the integration of technologies to a further level of complexity and maturity than currently pursued in Clean Sky.
The IDEN project will deliver an innovative solid-state based electrical power distribution network system representative of future Regional A/C and will become an integral part of the Regional A/C Iron Bird test rig.
The innovative electrical power distribution network will be part of a highly decentralized, modular and flexible, smart-grid, EPDS and will be equipped with enhanced electrical energy management functionalities in order to reduce or even delete the overload capabilities of the main generators thus saving weight and reducing fuel consumption.
The prime objective of IDEN is the design, development, manufacture, validation and integration of an innovative solid-state based Primary and Secondary Electrical Distribution Network for Regional A/C equipped with enhanced electrical energy management functionalities.
The project objectives include commissioning and support for the demonstration of the system and components at the Regional Innovative Aircraft Development Platform Iron Bird.
